Talkin’ about a revolution…

(Tip of the hat to Tracey Chapman)

On Sunday, while driving back from seeing my folks, I talked to Joel Isaacs from Los Angeles for an hour and a half. I’m not a big phone person but I’ve found those two hours driving home can be a time when I can get some business taken care of as well as to connect with people I may not see all the time.

Talking with Joel was great! He’s thinking of getting a Los Angeles PPS group going and wanted to touch base. We talked about a bunch of different things: different philosophies/viewpoints within the PPS movement, Z and ZNet, whether to use meetup.com, how to publicize the group, a group webpage, a potential first meeting agenda, and other stuff.

In addition to (hopefully) providing some practical help by conveying our experience here in Austin, the conversation illuminated two things for me. One is that we need to put together a primer for people interested in starting a PPS group that can address some of the practical and philosophical aspects of a group like ours. And by “we” here I mean the larger PPS community. Dan mentioned this in a recent blog post that I recommend people read.

Second, it was great to talk by phone. Since the overwhelming majority of our interactions come via the internet, talking to someone, even if not in person, was really refreshing. Plus a lot of organizing is relationship-building, and it’s harder to build relationships when your interactions are limited to emails. Actually Dan talks about that as well in the above linked post.
